The man who devised methadone treatment for addiction made a solo trek in Nepal aged 60 in 1973. Dr Dole was also a pioneer in the effects of cholesterol on arteries as well as in blood electrolytes in diabetic acidosis and other metabolic states. After his original methadone paper, he worked tirelessly for the field, even offering unique clinical insights to colleagues in the months before his death in 2006.
